Schedule and Class Descriptions

June 19th-23rd, 2017: ELEMENTARY CAMP FULL

Monday-Friday, 10am-3pm

Fee: $300

Capacity: 16 (Ages 6-10)

This session is for brand new, young, and excited musical theatre performers! Through song, dance, and theatre games, this is a great introductory week to musical theatre, and being onstage. Our campers will learn group numbers, and each work on a solo or duet to be shown on Friday during our session showcase. Ages 5 through 9 Capacity 16.

June 26th-30th, 2017: HIGH SCHOOL CAMP

Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm

Fee: $350

Capacity: 16 (Ages 14-18)

This session is for high school age musical theatre performers. Throughout the week, we will craft a slick showcase, each student working on multiple solos and small group numbers through a master class setting, and work on their group singing and dancing skills. Ages 14 through 18,; Capacity 16.

July 10th-14th, 2017: MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP #1

Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm

Fee: $350

Capacity: 16 (Ages 11-14)

Our most popular session, this is an amazing week for middle school aged performers wishing to have a blast, and further their singing and dancing skills. Each child will work on solos for their showcase at the end of the week, and perfect group numbers with each other. Ages 11 through 14; Capacity 16.

July 16th-17th, 2017: MONOLOGUE WORKSHOP

Sunday-Monday, 6pm-9pm

Fee: $50

Capacity: 10 (Ages 14-18)

July 17th-21st, 2017: DISNEY CAMP #2 FULL

Monday-Friday, 10am-3pm

Fee: $325

Capacity: 16 (Ages 7-13)

Who doesn’t love Disney?! This week is a great introduction to musical theatre through Disney songs and shows. July 24th-26th: DANCE INTENSIVE, BEGINNING

Monday-Wednesday, 10am-2pm

Fee: $125

Capacity: 12 (Ages 9-12)

This 3-day dance intensive is for our more beginning dancers. A musical theatre concentrated session, this session will work on dance and performance skills through iconic dance numbers. Ages 9 through 12; Capacity 12.

July 24th-28th: DANCE INTENSIVE, ADVANCED

Monday-Friday, 2pm-6pm

Fee: $200

Capacity: 12 (Ages 13-18)

In this 5 day musical theatre dance intensive, instructors will teach the group original Broadway choreography and iconic musical theatre dance styles, ending in a showcase on The Encore stage. Previous dance experience required. Ages 13 through 18; Capacity 12.

July 31st-August 2nd, 2017: SHAKESPEARE CAMP

Monday-Wednesday, 10am-3pm

Fee: $150

Capacity: 12 (Ages 14-18)

A three day study of one of Shakespeare’s plays through character and text analysis, reading and performance of portions of the script. Get ready to study the text in it’s original English, and examine how Shakespeare wrote. Ages 14 through 18; Capacity 12.

August 3rd-4th, 2017: STAGE COMBAT CAMP

Thursday-Friday, 10am-3pm

Fee: $100

Capacity: 12 (Ages 14-18)

This two day session teaches the basics of Stage Combat, and the safe ways to make cool things happen on stage! Explore these skills in a safe space with qualified instructors. Ages 14 through 18; Capacity 12.

A two day musical theatre performance master class with Encore Artistic Director and Broadway Actor, Dan Cooney. Work on your performance and audition skills! Ages 13 thorugh 18; Capacity 12.

August 16th-18th, 2017: NAZ EDWARDS MASTER CLASS

Wednesday-Friday, 10am-4pm

Fee: $200

Capacity: 12 (Ages 13-18)

Our 5th year of having our 3 day master class with Broadway Actor and voice teacher Naz Edwards! Work on vocal technique, performance, and Cabaret-style delivery in this master class. Ages 13 through 18; Capacity 12.

MEET THE STAFF

THALIA V. SCHRAMM (Program Director/Musical Theatre Instructor)

10-02-19-ThaliaSchramm-25Thalia designed and created The Encore Musical Theatre Summer Program in 2010, and is so happy to be returning for the 8th year. Thalia grew up in Ann Arbor, and has been working with The Encore since its inaugural production of Evita in 2009, and has been seen on The Encore stage in over 20 productions including Into the Woods (Baker’s Wife), Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown), Sweeney Todd (Johanna), Little Woman (Meg), The Last 5 Years (Cathy), The Fantasticks (Luisa), Lend Me a Tenor (Maggie), and Evita in Concert (Eva Peron). Her Encore Directing Credits: Spamalot (6 Wilde Award Nominations), Mary Poppins, Always… Patsy Cline, The Wizard of Oz, Seussical Jr., and Once Upon a Mattress Jr. She also recently directed Sing Happy: A Celebration of Kander and Ebb with Penny Seats Theatre in Ann Arbor. Thalia also began The Encore Junior Program in 2015.

SEBASTIAN GERSTNER (Musical Theatre/Dance Instructor)

Sebastian is beyond excited to be back teaching for the summer! This is his 7th year with the Summer Program. Sebastian recently finished his Masters Program to become an Elementary School Teacher from Oakland University, and holds a BFA in Theatre from MSU. His recent credits include Mary Poppins (Bert), Irrational (Hippasus), the one man show Chesapeake, and Xanadu (Thalia). He also recently won Wilde Awards for his performances in Spamalot (Patsy) with The Encore Musical Theatre Company and the one man show Buyer/Cellar with Theatre Nova.

OLIVIA HERNANDEZ (Musical Theatre/Voice Instructor)

Olivia is originally from Southern California. She made her way to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan, where she earned a BFA from the world renowned Musical Theatre Department under Mr. Brent Wagner. During her four years in college, Olivia played a variety of roles, from Aunt March in the musical version of LITTLE WOMEN, directed by Danny Gurwin, to Cinderella in INTO THE WOODS, directed by Mark Madama. Her recent credits include Maria in WEST SIDE STORY and Dorothy u/s in the world premiere of the musical, OZ at Lamb’s Player’s Theatre in San Diego, CA, LES MISERABLES at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA, and the title role in MARY POPPINS here at The Encore Musical Theatre. Olivia is thrilled to be a part of The Encore Musical Theatre Summer Program. She is passionate in her belief that an actor’s #1 job is communication– through spoken word, song, and movement. 

DANIEL C. COONEY (Master Class Instructor)

Broadway credits include Mamma Mia (Bill), Les Misérables, 9 to 5 the Musical, and Bonnie and Clyde. Off-Broadway credits include: Heathers (Kurt’s Dad/Veronica’s Dad), The Thing About Men (Man). National Tours: Evita (Che), Fiddler on the Roof (Perchik), The Civil War, and Les Misérables. Here at The Encore, Dan has directed Into the Woods (Wilde Award Nomination), Les MisérablesEvitaSweeney Todd (Wilde Award Nomination), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BeeDamn YankeesJesus Christ SuperstarThe Last 5 YearsGodspell, and Nevermore. Here at The Encore, Dan has been seen in Evita (Che), Jesus Christ Superstar (Judas), and Nevermore (Edgar Allen Poe). He recently began teaching at Roosevelt University/Chicago College of Performing Arts as Head of the Musical Theatre Department. Dan is a graduate of The Yale School of Drama.

NAZ EDWARDS (Master Class Instructor)

Naz Edwards is a singer/actor in the best and highest sense of both terms. A true believer that song encompasses the very life and lives from which it is drawn, she has a remarkable gift for blending her incredibly rich and dynamic vocal instrument with the story that it tells. Naz’s captivating presence has brought audiences – from Broadway and regional theatres, to intimate cabarets and individual listeners of her recordings, into the magic of the moment, a world of powerful emotions and intricate nuance.

TYLER DRISKILL (Music Instructor/Accompanist)

Tyler is an accompanist for the U-M Musical Theatre and Dance departments. Recent music direction credits include Into the Woods (Wilde Award for Best Music Direction), My Fair Lady (directed by Tony Walton), Into the Wild (Developmental Premiere), AssassinsSondheim on Sondheim, and An Evening with Jeremy Jordan for the Encore Musical Theatre Company. He has also music directed productions for Tipping Point Theatre and the Dio Theatre. This past October, Tyler joined vocalist Brad McNett in a performance of jazz standards at the Metropolitan Room in New York City.

DANIEL A. HELMER (Monologue and Shakespeare Instructor)

Daniel A. Helmer is an active member of the southeast professional theatre community, acting throughout the year with Michigan Shakespeare Festival and The Encore Musical Theatre Company. On stage credits include: Assassins (Charles Guiteau), Mary Poppins (Mr. Banks), Noises Off (Lloyd), and designing Fight Choreography for both Noises Off and Camelot here at The Encore. Previously a lecturer at Eastern Michigan University, Daniel earned his MFA in Acting at the East15 Acting School at University of Essex in England, where he acted on Shakespeare’s Globe and at GITIS in Moscow. He strives to learn as many new techniques as possible to help coach actors and continue to hone his skills. He is the Founder of The Round Table Theatre Company.

MEREDITH STEINKE (Dance Instructor)

Meredith studies at Chicago College of Performing Arts receiving a BFA in Musical Theatre with a Dance Emphasis. Her favorite roles include Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Ariel Moore in Footloose, Ensemble dancer in Promises, Promises, and a solo artist in At Risk!  She recently performed in Porchlight Theatre’s production of Little Me as a Rich Kid Rag Dancer. She has served as a choreographer for CCPA productions, Stagedoor Manor in New York, the Vail International Dance Festival, and Three Crows Theatre. Meredith also worked as the Festival Coordinator for the Vail International Dance Festival working with director Damian Woetzel.
